Replace "Obama" with "Bush" in that sentence. Now, Bush DIDN'T keep his word about listening tot he other side. He never even consulted with democrats on any significant policy decisions for his first 6 years, and ran this country into the ground. Did he earn you respect?
Bush didn't reach across the isle or to the American people. He had this attitude of going it alone. I don't know if he did it because he felt it was his responsibility (I can be like that) or some other reason. But it was a mistake, and I see that now.
Did he earn my respect? He earned my respect when he was my governor, but he slowly lost it as president.
