Usually, it's a lot of work. It can take a lot of research and digging to get at the truth, and often only time brings it out.
I watch TV news when something is happening I want to see on TV, like a Shuttle launch. Otherwise, I track my own information, often using the same sources reporters do. Or better ones.
The Katrina aftermath was a glaring example of the failures of "popular" journalism, with many badly researched stories and outright false stories treated as known facts. Fox News was a particularly bad offender, but not the worst.
Look at this current Palin thing. Anonymous sources, and second and third-hand information treated as hard facts. You wouldn't take that to the bank if it was simple neighborhood gossip. Why do it just because some talking head is saying it on TV?
The truth isn't that easy to find.
