...is that there is only enough evidence to convict as terrorists a small minority of those imprisoned in the American Gulag. Of the remainder, many MAY be terrorists, but there is not enough evidence to bring them to trial, much less put them away. Of the rest , many are just men who took up arms to defend their religion or country against the infidel, or who were accidentally rounded up in dragnets, or were betrayed by informers for money or personal vendettas, or who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
If the guilty are brought to trial, then the truth about the others will be fully exposed to the people of this nation (the rest of the world already knows), and this would be extremely embarassing to the Bush gang, particlarly since there are no doubt plenty of victims of false arrest, false imprisonment and even torture among the prisoners.
In short, the reason that they are in these camps is that trying any would mean admitting to the world the depth and breadth of the corruption and barbarity of the present administration and its governing philosophy. Yes, there are grounds for war crimes trials here.
As for "why this was allowed to happen", the answer is brutally simple. The supporters of this administration (some who argue so eloquently to continue this thuggery on this forum) are so concerned about their own domestic agenda of lower taxes, union bashing, safety-net dismantling, privatized health care, and corporate welfare that they will do anything to cover up and make excuses for the war criminals involved in this disgrace. They have a personal financial stake in perpetuating this injustice and obscuring the truth behind it. They share in the profit and thereby share in the guilt. It's why I no longer post here. These fascists offend me. I refuse to dignify their poison with debate.
What they think, but don't dare admit out loud, is that those prisoners are just little brown foreigners anyway. Better that every one of the innocent suffer than even just one guilty one escape.
