Space probes with their improving AI and other technologies are the most efficient and least
expensive way to explore space. Even though MSL will cost several billion dollars, there is
virtually no way a manned mission could ever be sent to Mars so cheaply - but by all means,
some private space company prove me wrong here!
Human exploration for the most part should now be focused on colonizing other worlds
to preserve our species. Of course they can also conduct exploration and other
services relevant from space, but until they are established it will be much more
efficient to use machines for boldly going to brave new worlds.
If private space industry can ever literally get off the ground, there will likely be
groups who want to leave Earth to live their lives the way they want to without
interference from the rest of humanity. I don't know how much exploration and
science knowledge we can expect from them, but at least a few samples of our
species will be spread out there, just in case.
