is because it is the message of the people right now that call themselves conservatives. It has been the message of the Republican Party for decades now and you continually refer to yourself as a conservative and very rarely do you bring up outrage at the overreach of that movement. I do not however believe you to be part of the worst of that side. In fact, were the Republican Party made up of folks like you and your obvious compassion, the balance of power in this country would be perfectly to my liking.
It's what the obvious answer is - balance. Unfortunately, balance doesn't evolve naturally. In order to reach that middle ground, if one side bullies, the other side must reply back with equal strength if attempts at compromise are blown off.
Conservatism right now has to undergo penance for their overreach of the last few decades and anyone aligning themselves with its philosophy must be prepared to suffer from the inevitable loss of credibility.
I know you aren't a fearful person because you put yourself out there daily for all to see. The truly scared hide behind a cloak of anonymity.
