re: National Geographic

"Had a special on marijuna (medicinal, cultural, judicial) last night and I must say I was rather fascinated by it all. Not to judge the shops, the culture or the people who are long term users, it DID make a point about Amsterdam, where you can smoke joints in a coffee house and pick your weed offered up like some dessert tray.

They interviewed one of the judges and she said that heavy drug use such as heroin and cocaine were way DOWN there compared to other countries, and she believed it was because allowing the citizens to own small amounts of pot and smoke it out in the open, and going after the hard drug pushers had actually solved part of the problem. I think she said that it was taxed as well, and brought quite a bit of revenue into the city."

I don't think the govt should try to stop people from taking any kind of drugs. I do think laws against giving drugs [any kind] to minors or to people who don't want to take a drug [date rape drugs, for instance] should be against the law and severely punished.
So I don't care if legalizing pot does or does not reduce other kinds of drug use. But if we were to make alcohol illegal again, it's pretty certain that this would cause in increase in other illegal drug use.
