"$13 billion later, nuclear waste site at dead end."

"'We can do a better job' than Yucca, energy secretary tells lawmakers."

This sort of thing is a complete puzzlement to me. There is nothing wrong with Yucca Mountain as a site, it's developed, and it's there. The "we can do better" goes for a lot of things - airplanes, rockets, skyscrapers, automobiles - but we have that one NOW.

We could take it over to Iraq and dump it, thereby proving Saddam had an underground nuclear program and was engaged in making dirty bombs. That might be better. But in the meantime what is wrong with Yucca Mountain? While we're getting ready to develop Saddam's retroactive, radioactive nuke program.

The damned place is far more stable than is mankind, anyone stumbling across it in a million years is going to know what to do with it or won't even recognize it. The radiation burns will be indistinguishable from the burns from the gradual expansion of the goddamned Sun or runaway global warming or something.

Just plain stupid. "We can do a better job" my aching patootie. We haven't done a better job. And in the meantime lets drive the car we have, fly the planes we own, etc.
