Radiation, fields, transuranic elements and much more.
Electromagnetic radiation and nuclear radiation have nothing in common, one is an electron shell phenomenon, the other comes from the atomic nucleus.
There's a cool scene in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home in which Scotty gives out the formula for transparent aluminum:

When pressed by McCoy about altering history, Scotty replies the company he gave the formula to may have invented it. Needless to say, sometimes I feel like Scotty.
Nothing that happens with the atom is isolated. Shell phenomenon and the nucleus are forever linked. Just like science today understands that a cell functions - they don't exactly understand the intelligence transfer and control process. These are quantum level interactions and occur between the DNA and the rest of the cell. Same is true with the atom and it's orbiting "particles" - all just signals and wave packets. The atom seeking balance and discharging energy in alpha, beta or gamma radiation is controlled by a field. The nucleus is the apex of the atomic field. Particle placement at any moment, discharges of radiation are all controlled by this field as it constantly interacts with its environment.
Atomic gamma radiation is the byproduct of the imbalanced electromagnetic field of the atom. The field spits out packets of wave forms of gamma level frequencies until it achieves a stable energy level.
This is the big mystery for science: What makes one level stable and another unstable?
The answer is in the understanding of an atom as a field that can only support or balance so much energy in its given structure. Like a self-repairing grocery bag that spits out groceries when they are too heavy and then mends, the atom spits out radiation because it seeks a certain fundamental energy level.
This emf field exists even when it is not discharging extra energy as gamma radiation, but when you are dealing with an unstable atom or element, these fields are that much more energized and broadcast in accordance with Maxwell's equations and measured in Planck units.
A radioactive atom or element emits a field whose amplitudes are increased and act in ways similar to a magnet - drawing lesser fields with the same fundamental frequency to it. In this case, radioactive particles, gases and radiation wave packets. This is why elements on a planet are found in packets or pockets. During the planet's formation these elements form and are drawn together by field relationship.
So a casket full of fuel rods emits a collective EMF field of these Uranium, Plutonium or any of the given element combinations used for fuel rods. The reason these transuranic elements emit radiation in the first place is because the field structure here on earth and around our sun's field only supports a given spectra of energy. Any element that has more energy starts seeking balance with the Earth/Sol field parameters.
Yes - each atom here on Earth becomes a sub-field in a greater planetary field and an even larger solar field and receives parameters/cues from these greater fields!
Stable Plutonium, Uranium or elements with atomic weights of 490, 750 or even 1599? All possible if they are formed in the presence of a star that can support them.
A being from one world literally would become molecularly unstable in the field of a lesser solar system - all their higher atomic weight structures would start to decay. As would their spaceships, clothing etcetera. That's one of the reasons we have so few visitors from other worlds more advanced - our solar system simply can't support them.
So the advanced ones who want to explore the galaxy develop fields that protect them and support them. Leaving the ship in a small sun system like ours would be suicidal.
But.. I've already far exceeded Scotty's transgressions with the natural order of planetary development. I merely thank goodness this site doesn't get that much exposure. The other good thing is that no one can tell whether I am just blowing smoke or being completely straightforward.
That makes any of my revelations completely acceptable, because they are always overshadowed by doubt and suspicion that I'm somehow off my rocker, full of it - or "testing" the minds of fellow Zoners.
Each must make their own assessment.
