Some silly rules affecting transportation.

I happened to know casually an executive of the local power company. He was involved in the decommissioning of the local nuclear plant, and they had to get the core to Hanford, WA, on a barge going up the Columbia River.

They were held up for years, that years, by the requirement that any vehicle being used to transport nuclear waste be able to be dropped 20 feet vertically and maintain structural integrity. That was written to apply to railcars and truck trailers running off an embankment.

Well, they couldn't find a way to test a barge under those circumstances. I'm sure the barge that could pass that requirement would be a big waste of money.

I know they barged the thing up the river eventually, but my friend had left so I don't know how they got around that particular problem.
