Sometimes the naivete of the committed amuses me.

TB, as long as you really think the "businessmen" I refer to are grocers and laundry owners and small manufacturers and retailers you will continue to reveal your abysmal ingnorance of how modern capitalism works. You are still thinking in terms of small entrepreneurial capitalists, or to use the Marxist term, the "petty bourgeosie". These are the grunts, and at most, the noncoms of the capitalist world, and they are as much a victim of it as the workers.

Capitalists don't run the local automobile dealership. They don't physically produce anything, or even manage anything. They hire middle class professionals like us to fill in the lower level staff and upper level productive positions. They even hire entrepreneurs, and let them take the risks. They've done a great job in real estate lately, haven't they?

Capitalists manipulate Capital, with a capital "C". They control the flow of Capital to produce profit. For them, "businesses", as you think of them, are just little machines for making money, to be turned on and off and bought and sold. Capitalism is a system where finance, banks, stocks and bonds, insurance, and all those other intangibles that are parasitic on real entrepreneurs function. They are not manipulating matter and energy, they are redirecting the flow of information. After all, that's all that Capital is, the information content of the society, expressed as currency, or securities, or IOUs, or data in computer memory.

You have this idealized, romantic, childlike Randian view of the entrepreneurial hero, beset by government parasites, lazy workers, and ruthless competition. But that's not who I'm talking about. If there was a free market we wouldn't be having this conversation at all. We have people, and organizations (yes, there are non-human entities, primitive but rapacious administrative life forms operating here) whose job is not to buy and sell stuff, or to produce anything. They exist by looting, and trafficking in the true producers, both workers AND companies.

Danny DeVito played one in the movie.
