Industry has never footed the whole bill for nuclear power.

They'll pay for the plants and the fuel. They make a healthy profit when they sell the power.

Waste disposal and fuel reprocessing, insurance, and the regulatory oversight needed to keep the public reassured is paid for by the taxpayer. This is not a criticism, perhaps its the only way to have nuclear power, but it should be understood up front. Oil and coal are still a lot cheaper when you add up the real, hidden costs.

Of course, when you start considering the "hidden" cost of carrier battle groups needed to ensure the flow of oil in perpetuity, then maybe nuclear is cheaper in the long run.
