As I see it, Communism was discontinued in Soviet Russia because it had fulfilled its purpose and outlived its utility to its founders.
Since that time, it has been fashionable for some to suggest that the United States of America "spent" the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics into virtual bankruptcy, an argument based on the idea that the Red state's inefficient economy and unwieldy bureaucracy could not compete over the long haul with our dynamic, entrepreneurial, free-enterprise system, which indeed has burnt a lot of cash making those Big Sticks.
If true, then one might also make the further case that the USA too has spent itself into bankruptcy fighting the Reds and currently, the terrorist bogeyman. For all I know, those making this second argument may well be right. After all, building Big Sticks for our defense triad created a lot of jobs, but I wonder if there's any real return on an investment in weapons.
But more likely, I think, is that - like the "fall" of the USSR - America's current financial collapse is all part of a planned process.
