"I just think more could be said. How about nationalizing the oil companies and telecommunications like you said. Get rid of ag subsidies and produce what is needed. "
Wiki:
"Nationalization may occur with or without compensation to the former owners. If it takes place without compensation it is a case of expropriation. Nationalization is distinguished from property redistribution in that the government retains control of nationalized property. Some nationalizations take place when a government seizes property acquired illegally. For example, the French government seized the car-makers Renault because its owners had collaborated with the Nazi occupiers of France."
So when you say nationalizing, do you actually mean expropriation. Or if the govt buys it, how do you know if the govt paid too much or too little for it?
I fail to see any advantage to a govt running an oil company.
Nor do I see much difference between a private company being monopoly and a govt being one.
To me what what an enterprise successful or not is dependent upon the people in the company. I don't make the assumption that merely because some enterprise is a government that this somehow makes the people involved in an enterprise somehow better.
Anyways, I don't know what problem you seem to trying to solve by having oil companies replaced with a government oil company. I'm guessing you see oil production as critical, and therefore because it is important the government should run it??
Now, I would favor a socialism type solution, in regards to off shore drilling. But I would not want a govt running such operation- but simply that the oil reserves would seen as owned by the people and that the people should given adequate compensation- similar to what people in Alaska are now getting.
