Do hospitals or doctors pick people from a line-up for an amputation?
Medical mistakes are made because of carelessness, fatigue, haste...the list goes on, but steps have been taken to reduce or eliminate most common and uncommon errors in the medical industry. There are good doctors and bad. The same is true for hospitals. Beyond that, I'll readily acknowledge that the medical system has its problems, as well as a whole array of questionable practices and/or recommended tests and procedures, but in the final analysis, comparing the criminal justice system and capital punishment to the medical system and its shortcomings is nothing more nothing less than ye olde comparison of apples and oranges.
No, we shouldn't shut down the Interstate Highway System because of 30,000-some-odd fatalities every year, nor should we allow innocents to be executed in the rush to judgment. In Illinois a few years ago, several innocents were found on Death Row, and the state suspended executions.
I may not know the solution, but I do recognize the problem.
