Why not instead give them over to logic and reason? That's what I think I do. As an atheist I have the same motivations for greed and violence that anyone else does but instead of looking to some magical being as a reason why not to act upon them, I look at how my life will be better if I don't. We should be able without the omnipotence to see that our own lives are enriched if we don't lie, steal, and hurt others. It's common societal sense to me.
What scares me about tying the morals to some God or his son is what happens if your faith slips? Do your morals then vanish? Do you then have nothing holding you back from heinous acts against your neighbors? I'd rather that the people around me come to their ethics because it makes sense without the faith.
