Space/Science » in reply to I like Science Fiction as well as the next guy, but let's stay with reality.

But if you take the Sol system apart...

...and remake it into a Dyson Shell, you solve the problem of space
object impacts as you need all the debris in the Sol system for building
material and there won't be any more volcanoes to worry about, or
bad weather.

Plus if you build a solid shell, you get the land equivalent of five billion
Earths - but by the time a Dyson Shell is made, there won't be any
baseline humans to worry about such things as living space.

Unless we all go dead and nobody else ever comes to visit our system,
I expect our descendants will not leave the Sol system in the form it
is in now, as it is much too inefficient for the needs of an advanced
society or being.

Sure this sounds like science fiction to us, just like sending humans to
the Moon did a few centuries ago. In reality our descendants will look
back and wonder why we were so timid with our imaginations.

I better not tell you about the concept to make a habitat around a
star that is over 1 light year across, though.
