I haven't looked into it in detail, but the real trick seems to be a way to convince the body to manufacture these special "stalk antibodies" on its own.

The short-term fix is injecting pre-made antibodies, which seems to confer immunity for about three weeks, which at least might be enough to squelch an epidemic.
