You will control costs when you start inserting market forces back into the system, and not until then. Destroying whatever market forces are still left won't make things better.
Anybody who thinks the government is the road to great services at low cost is not paying any attention at all. Look around you at major government projects in any field you can think of. NASA. The military. Construction projects. Heck, education. Do they produce results? Sure they do. But does "excellent results for the money spent" strike you as a primary characteristic of any of them? ANY?
Now, go over the list again. Are these projects driven by thoughtful consideration of how to get the best results, or are they driven by lobbies, politics, infighting, turf wars, and how to spread the tax money over the broadest pile of voters?
Do you really want our entire medical system run like this?
