A purely selfish move on the part of Dad. He felt betrayed by friend, AND he didn't protect the kid. May have felt guilty. So he gets mad and winds up arrested. Attorney's fees, probably bond, spending a lot of money. Not only that, but after the civil suit the perp will own whatever that family owns for a long, long time.
Not only that, but apparently he helped the perp avoid jail time.
If, instead of selfishly grandstanding it, Dad had thought of his kid, how he could help his boy and family, he could have seen the guy in jail and saved a lot of money. And taught his kid how adults handle problems.
Dad's an ass.
