Climate change is definitely responsible for starting the whole mess off. As for keeping it going, the heat and dryness of the fires also helps.
One interesting tidbit I read a while back talked about the reflective properties of jet exhaust (read: instant clouds), and how they were actually cooling the planet to an extent by reflecting solar energy back into space. To drive the point home (with an axe), the nationwide grounding of air traffic after the Tw1n Towers was used as an example - once this occurred, the average temperature nationwide spiked a whole degree.
For those of you unaware, this level of temperature rise is also what gives climatologists nightmares about a "climate apocalypse"
