A belief in a Supreme Being is not an absurd speculation as to how the world got here. I may not accept it myself, but it can't be ruled out, and some form of that belief might even be true.
But the literal Genesis account of creation as taught by our Fundamentalists Christians IS absurd, it is ridiclous. It's not even mistaken. It is a tribal superstition, Bronze Age mysticism, medieval mumbo-jumbo. I can't imagine anyone in this day and age believing it, or tolerating as rational anyone who does.
I can no more more take anyone who sincerely believes that seriously than I can accept a grown man who believes Santa Claus delivers the presents on Christmas Eve.
The fact that a large number of my fellow citizens actually demand that belief is a prerequisite for their President is absolutely appalling to me.
And the fact that an even larger number of my fellow citizens are not equally appalled by this is totally terrifying to me.
The global warming thing is a little different. I believe the world is getting warmer, that it is indeed human-generated and I am convinced most of those who don't agree with me are motivated by ideological, not scientific reasons. But I also recognize I MAY be wrong, on one or all of those counts. It's not likely but I can't rule it out.
But this creationism thing goes beyond politics or ideology or personal preference, it is a position so alien to me, so other-worldly, that I just can't wrap my head around it. It threatens everything I know and feel and believe. It's not just that I don't think the world is that way, but that I don't want the world to be that way. And I can't imagine why anyone would want it to be that way.
