A massive majority of Americans are religious. Most of them believing that we are, at some level, a product of God's creation.
Think. If it were true that this was a negative driving force of politics, it would have resulted in the theocratic nightmare you envision long before you were born.
In fact, the religious influence in politics has actually declined steadily over many years. Legal case after legal case, each one a victory for secular society over law-imposed religious views. Anyone transported to this time from the early 1950s would have a very hard time thinking our society is less liberal (speaking in the social sense) than the one he came from.
There have been nuts trying to put pants on horses since my granfather was young. They get nowhere. Relax.
