My parents were agnostic, my grandparents deist. They believed there was probably some kind of god, but they claimed no special knowledge of him or path to him. I suppose further back, in the old country, they were Catholics. For educated, modern, urban Cubans, religion was for old women, the blacks and the country folk.
But in any case, their religion had nothing to do with their politics, a happy situation the North American founding fathers tried to institutionalize in their new nation, to their credit, although they evidently failed.
Protestant religious fanaticism is inextricably intertwined with racism, nativism, and reactionary politics in this country. It will drag us down yet.
Conservatives, even those who may not be racists or fanatics themselves, are exploiting this deadly combination to promote their own domestic political agenda. It's being engineered all right, with only the immediate practical results considered. And it will drag you down too.
God forgive you, Captain Ahab.
