I'm not sure why you think compassion for individuals or local people doesn't "touch my wallet." Where do you think the money comes from for donations, food banks, backpacks for kids, the library benefits, and the like?
Compassion for large groups seems to be a lot more easy and painless. Vote for the right guy and sleep soundly. Somebody else's wallet will take care of it.
