sic temper tyrannus

the right/conservatives/republicans are interested in only one thing. they want to continue to dominate the economy, and by extension, the government that serves them, without any supervision, regulation or taxation. they will not tolerate any calls for transparency or accountability. it's not a conspiracy or a plot, its simply a natural desire to maintain control and supremacy of the society in the hands of one class, they want to organize their activities, hire, fire, pay, and make all extractive, production and distribution decisions in a way that serves their interests. or at least, in a way they believe will best serve their interests. they call this "freedom" or "liberty", and i suppose from their point of view, it is. remember how the slave-holding south rebelled against the union to fight "tyranny"? they couldn't see the irony either.

this is nothing new. it has always been thus, since way before there was a "right" or a "left". the merchants, bankers, great landholders, manufacturers, that is, the individuals who own or direct great industrial, financial or agricultural enterprises, have always resisted interference with their activities, particularly from those they feel are by nature poor, envious, or not deserving of or incapable of properly appreciating "freedom" and "liberty".
they may compete and wage war with each other, but they will not tolerate anyone else crashing the party.

this struggle has been going on since the fall of the roman empire. and like all ruling classes in history, sooner or later they will lose their grip and be replaced by another ruling class which will eventually find itself in charge, desperate to stay there by overstaying their welcome and abusing their privileges.

look at history, the forces of reaction always respond to those of progress in the same way, using the same rhetoric. every change and reform threatens liberty, established custom, god, country, morality and is sure to bring about the end of the world. and eventually, when the change comes, the dire predictions fail to materialize as the new ruling class consolidates its gains and a new power sharing arrangement evolves.

it would all be terribly depressing, even full of despair, but there does appear to be progress. history proceeds by fits and starts, and sometimes it even slides back, losing ground. but eventually things improve, and things get better. there is hope! things are better now than when the romans ruled, and they will be better still in the future. we are assured of this because of the record of history. remember, after the renaissance, even the most brutal mercantilism and imperialism was an improvement over the feudal aristocracy and their great estates, and after the great revolutions of the 17th and 18th centuries in britain, france and america, even capitalism was a progressive force. 😁
