A side note
There is more to the insurance company business model than you suggested. They have a second major source of income: they must maintain a reserve of money to pay out against exceptional claims. This pool of money earns interest. When interest rates (and bonds/bills, etc.) are high, you will find insurance companies' profits soar. When interest rates are in the toilet, then insurance companies do less well.
