While it's easy to say "they don't make them like they used to," modern appliances and other tech have a lot going for them too. Cars are a lot more expensive than they used to be, and I can't fix them myself anymore, but from my experience the reliability is fantastic, and maintenance a lot easier.
New appliances use a lot less energy than they used to, which doesn't suck, and I've had good luck with my new washer as far as reliability goes.
Still, refrigeration devices do suffer a bit from the loss of Freon. It's harder to find top loading washers now, which I'm used to, and I agree with you that they add a lot of electronic bells and whistles that are really unnecessary.
A refrigerator with a high-res monitor on the front is serious overkill.
