You can always spot a flame in a tree-shaped TOC: It's that long spindly branch like a runner from a hanging wandering jew plant, just two people trading punches.
It's probably unfair to lay the blame for the Zone's present state on Tom. I don't think he has some plan to destroy the place, and while too many people have commented on it for me to deny that his astounding partisan stubbornness rubs a lot of people the wrong way, note that he needs somebody to play with to really flourish. He's gotten three turns out of you so far, and I don't see an end in sight.
Still, flames detract from any board except Flame, and that's where you two ought to have gone about three exchanges ago. At least if all you want to do is trade insults.
I know that I've given into the impulse to spar with Tom just for the hell of it. A couple of times lately I rationalized it as a possibly "spicing" things up, but that's pretty lame. Rehabilitating CurrentEvents isn't a matter of changing Tom; it's wishful thinking to hope that it's that simple. What it'll take is people making the decision, each time it comes up, to not get drawn into meaningless partisan bickering; and maybe look for a more constructive response than to get yet again in Tom's face.
I think you've ceded too much power to him. You don't have to ask Tom's permission or get his cooperation to have a rational discussion here. This isn't the US Senate, and it's not possible to filibuster a forum. Talk around Tom if you want.
