What we are seeing is the transformation of corporate oil gathering to the reality of the abiotic oil pockets in the Earth's crust. While still preaching peak oil and charging accordingly, they are now attempting to tap the vast replenishing pockets, not just the shallow pools and veins. Drilling on land it is too difficult to reach those depths and the abiotic pockets, drilling through water isn't easy, but considerably less difficult.
Anyone who still believes this stuff is composed of dinosaur and plant remains has not done the numbers.
So companies are positioning themselves so that they can make the big link up. Naturally, this requires new approaches, more risks and new methods.
This oil spill is just proof that the oil is there and is like anything else - natural. An oil leak in the ocean is actually as natural as an volcanic eruption of ash and pumice. It's not a man-made substance. It's not "pollution" more than ocean water is pollution. In this case man simply facilitated the mixing of two natural Earth properties.
Some day folks will realize that nature balances all things anyway. The ecological disaster is change and evolution by any other name.
Of course those who still cling to the profitable myth of peak oil can believe it is the dinosaurs revenge and attempt to make extinct other species and that oil is some evil thing that man has created to besmirch nature.
