I take politics very seriously - you have to when politicians have enormous potential power over your life. You take geology seriously if you live on the slopes of a volcano.
But I don't take the debate itself that seriously. In all the years I've posted on boards like this, I've never gotten to the point where I wouldn't mind hitting a bar with anyone I've argued with. Well, I don't drink that much, but you get the idea.
I think I've used the metaphor of a football game in the past. There's knock down, drag out violence, trash talk, and all the rest, but when the whistle blows, you help the other guy up and go slug some Gatorade.
On the other hand, I think my last metaphor was a gladiator arena, wasn't it? Maybe I need to work on that... :)
