From this article:
- The four biggest industries in the Gulf of Mexico are oil, tourism, fishing and shipping, and they account for some $234 billion in economic activity each year.
- Oil and gas interests generate $124 billion or 53% of the total money.
- Tourism is the second largest industry in the Gulf at 46% of the Gulf economy, or over $100 billion a year.
- Commercial fishing and shipping together account for only 1% of the Gulf's total economic activity. The number isn't given in the article, but that works out to about $2.3 billion.
It might be interesting to compare the economic damage done by the spill with the economic damage that will be done to the oil industry and surrounding industries by Obama's shutdown. Never mind what he's been doing to other industries across the country.
