The British Petroleum Gulf oil spill disaster may turn into Obama's Katrina, and Big Oil's Three Mile Island: the timing couldn't have been more impeccable--and ironic. Where was all that great new technology the industry mouthpieces and shills promised would make this impossible? What has Sarah to say about all this? And who's going to pay the butcher's bill?
I don't just mean the cleanup, that will be peanuts. I mean the real damages, the billions in long-term losses to the tourist and fisheries industries, and all the industries and jobs that depend on them. Tourism will eventually recover, but the wetlands destruction in the Mississippi delta could be for years. This is not just a few cutesy sea otters, oily birds, and other assorted fuzzy-wuzzies in some remote part of Alaska. This is one of the few remaining spawning and breeding grounds (now that the Ten Thousand Islands and Florida Bay have been devastated by the man-made Everglades drought), where most commercially important Gulf fish, crustaceans and molluscs spend some key part of their life cycle.
Don't tell me, when private enterprise screws up, the free market steps in, automatically makes adjustments, punishes the evildoers, and makes everything hunky-dory, right? Sheeeeeeeit.
They're being awfully quiet now, no doubt putting together their cover story, ready to pour oil on the troubled waters. (Sorry, I couldn't resist it!). But I can't wait till the winger spin machine cranks up and manages to blame this all on too much government regulation, high taxes, and the seditious exaggerations of the leftist environmental lobby and the New York Times.

It wouldn't have been so bad except for the southerly wind.
It really wasn't that much oil.
The MSM has blown this all out of proportion.
Natural systems recover fast, just wait and see.
That area was environmentally screwed up for other reasons anyway.
Oil is GOOD for the swamplands; it kills salt water marsh mosquito larvae.
Jobs will come back, in totally new industries, like environmental restoration (but only if we cut taxes and regulations).
It was all Pelosi's fault.
It might be interesting, when this well is finally capped, if someone could calculate just how long the USA's energy needs could have been be met by the oil spilled during this disaster. I'd really like to see a cost-benefit analysis on that. But I can see only one possible benefit: new offshore drilling in the US littoral is finished.
