If I could find a word that was stronger than exacerbating, I'd use that.

When we went through the downturn after 911, the conservatives on this forum correctly point out that the recession develope during the Clinton years.

And now? Tom gingerly sweeps history under the rug and uses the situation to flog scocialism.

There's a word for that.
