I agree with Frank, unless you've run the registry cleaner, and it cleaned out your file associations, which has never happened here. Could have been something else going on.
Don't know which OS you've got going but file associations (what tells the OS which program to use with which extensions) are easily reset. Go to Control Panel, click on folder options, then click the tab called "file types". Scoll down the list until you get to ".doc", and see what it says to open with. Click the "change..." button in that lower panel, you'll get a list of programs to choose from.
