A roof dish is needed to pull in the satellite signals for the internet/phone/tv access. Once the signal is in the house, it would usually be fed to a box that would have an Ethernet output. An Ethernet cable connection to a computer would give that computer access.
For WiFi, that Ethernet output would be directed to a WiFi router (usually a little box, sometimes with a couple of short stick-like antennas on it, although my AirPort box has no external antenna at all.) The signal from this little box would reach any WiFi capable computers nearby. Usually, such a router has a very limited range. My AirPort router is in my garage office, and I need an AirPort Extreme plugin extender to get a decent signal on the far side of my house.
I use both direct Ethernet cable connections and WiFi in the house.
