Good choice, Breck's a great setting. Since it was a mining town, most of the private land there is from old patented mining claims, typically measuring 300 feet by 1500 feet. Each claim had a name, which gives you the opportunity for some fun. His land might just have an old shaft or tunnel. I know of houses in the mountains where the house was built in front of a mine tunnel (called an "adit"). The house looks normal, except for there is a tunnel in a back room into the mountainside.
Here's an interesting discussion about Breck's geographical history: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=532860
Right now, the valley is suffering from the pine beetle. Many of the trees in the valley are dead, so it looks a little different these days.
The Continental divide is on the range just to the west of town, above the ski area. That part of the Rockies is known as the Ten Mile Range.
