Well...
It was a response to Standard Irrelevant Red Herring Technique Number One. I saw plenty of it throughout the entire 2006 and 2008 election cycles, and there was enough of it to obscure the real issues of statism versus liberty, and the ideologies of the candidates on both sides.
Didn't seem to work as well this time around.
