Major accomplishments:
Recovery Act - Stopped the two year job loss streak, saved millions of jobs and created millions more, by investing in infrastructure, education, and clean energy. Further, what you'll never hear from the right, tax cuts were the biggest individual component of the Recovery Act.
Wall St. Reform - Consumer and investor protections, stopping predatory lending practices. Brought shadowy Wall Street trades into the light, and ended taxpayer-funded bailouts. Did it go far enough? No. But only the most radical wingnuts (read: Michelle Bachman)would say it wasn't needed after the 2008 financial crisis which plunged us into the great recession.
Middle Class Tax Cut - Reduced taxes for 95% Americans and extended unemployment benefits to Americans who lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
Credit Card Reform - Stopped unfair credit card practices. Reform banned
retroactive rate hikes, implemented new protections for students and young
people, and required credit card companies to explain their terms in plain
language.
Clean Energy - New emissions and fuel efficiency standards for American cars and investments in clean-energy technologies.
Saving the Auto Industry - Obama acted decisively to invest in America’s auto
industry. The bailout of the auto industry protected against absolute devastation in the economies of the Midwest, and it is now turning out to
be a huge financial boon for taxpayers.
Health Care Reform - Ended the most heinous policies of the insurance industry and moved to start controlling costs that threaten to bankrupt the nation if the status quo were left intact.
Children's health insurance - expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) extended coverage to another 4 million low-income children.
Ended Combat Operations in Iraq - Nearly 100,000 troops have left Iraq so we can focus on fighting Al Qaeda. All will be out by 2012.
START Treaty - Reduced nuclear arsenals, put inspectors on the ground in Russia, and renew America’s leadership in pursuit of a world without
nuclear weapons.
New Af-Pak Strategy - We have gone on the offensive with more troops in Afghanistan and more drone strikes in Pakistan. Major progress has been made in the Taliban's traditional stronghold in Helmand and Kandahar.
Reformed Student Loans - No longer do the banks get to skim nearly $70B away from students, while providing absolutely nothing in return, except for higher interest rates.
New GI Bill - Making college more affordable to returning vets.
Education - Programs like “Race to the Top†and “Educate to Innovate†are giving American schools the tools and resources they need to be successful.
Repealing DADT - Ending this discriminatory law.
Protecting Against Hate Crimes - The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act gives law enforcement officials new tools to prosecute those who commit hate crimes.
Fair Pay to Women - The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act makes it easier for women to challenge unequal pay practices.
Much more has been done but these are the highlights. His biggest failure, not passing Cap and Trade. That is a really big one.
