My friend reports: He said he's just above the poverty line so he isn't able to get help. I think he's tried everything out there.
"Our poverty line is set for the mid-1900's. It's unrealistic for today.
"He's a good hearted man, with a great education, and a surprising background in government/computers. But he's become slowly mentally incompetent since his wife died of cancer about five years ago. In his confusion he's lost most of his money. But you could not find a sweeter person anywhere. He used to live in Topeka, but I never knew him. He started talking to me somewhere a long time ago when he found out I live in Topeka. I think his very old grandmother still lives here. Kansas, though, is not a state you go to for help if you're poor. They hate poor people here. Sneer at them and call them lazy and ignorant."
