The 2009 result was a legal refund of an overtax.
You make a good point about foreign vs. U.S. taxes, but even the U.S. taxes paid are significant. 3 to 5 billion for one single corporation.
People below the poverty line don't pay taxes except for payroll taxes, and aren't listed as taxpayers in the statistics of my link.
The income split point for 2008 for top and bottom 50 percent is $33,048. You can put the cutoff line at the 25 - 75 percent line if you want. The income split there is $67,280. Taxpayers above that income level pay 86 percent of all income taxes.
86 percent of everything you see that is paid for by Federal discretionary spending comes from this top 25 percent. Put the cutoff line at the top 5 percent, and the percentage they pay for is 59 percent.
Another column you might find instructive are the ones showing share of income vs. share of taxes. Anybody who says the rich aren't paying taxes is an idiot. Anybody who says they aren't paying their share isn't paying attention.
The "rich" are carrying this country's whiny ass on their backs.
