The engineering solutions have been around for a generation or longer. It isn't the engineering that's the problem in this day and age.
A vast amount of America's infrastructure, much of which we rely heavily on, would be impossible to build in the modern political environment. I drove back and forth to Southern California this weekend. As I drove by the massive water handling systems, the electrical transmission lines running through parks that are younger than they are, reclaimed farmlands, and other systems created in an earlier age, I realized that nothing like that could ever be done again from scratch.
It's great to have phones you can play movies on and wonderful electronics - I'm not being sarcastic about that - but much of Western civilization rests on a lot of slowly decaying foundations.
As for "doing something," I helped start the private space industry a couple of decades ago. I wish I'd been able to stay on the peak of the wave (financially speaking), but it's still something to have seen private rockets move out of the "looney" zone and into "I thought it was a good idea all along." I'm thinking of writing a book on it, but as Atrus said, "the end is not yet written."
We might still see solar power satellites and resources from asteroids someday.
