Today is Hiring Day at McDonalds. Looking for 50,000 people.
In that end of the employment market, anybody with a decent work ethic can almost write their own ticket. It's a cliche, but a lot of life IS just showing up on time. Just from talking to people in that kind of business, a strong work ethic is pretty damn rare. Especially, unfortunately, in too many white young people.
Other ethnic groups? A lot of them have work ethic coming out the ears. I don't pay much attention to the face of the guy or gal behind the counter at fast food places, but I noticed the Hispanic* guy at McDonalds serving me at the cash register was missing his right hand. Managed just fine, too. A week later I'm at Happi House. Same guy! Now that I know who to look for, I spotted him several times at both places. Eventually I asked him if he had any more jobs besides these. He laughed, and said no.
* Best guess. So many different ethnicities and mixes around here that it's hard to tell most of the time.
