Something you can do
Support your local bank. Community and small banks came through this last flap almost untouched in many areas, and they don't participate in most of this fancy fiscal dancing.
Easier said than done in many cases, of course. I got a mortgage at a local bank some years back (when "savings and loan" meant something), and it ended up getting sold to one of the Big Boys anyway. Hell, most everything wound up at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the end. Party on, the taxpayer has you covered. Have some fun here.
