Competitors.
Nobody is me and, therefore, nobody can hope to become my exact equal.
So long as there is a common enemy in the world, there shall be allies against them -- us and them being the only true lines.
And these allies will compete among each other for their national security, but rarely would they become so disgruntled as to fall to the "other side" -- because it is there that the big guns of the U.S. (current military leader of the planet) are targeting. Allies will either stand firm beside us, stand firm behind us, duck quivering over the horizon to peek from cover, or step away to declare themselves neutral.
Competition is what drove the U.S. to its current global standing. We won. Why is this a bad thing? Why should we now back off and infer to the world it was all a fluke, and that Democracy is actually a technical failure?
The formula for national success is here, Robert. What follows this success is a thing called peace. We gave peace a firm foothold here in the West. Why must we now stop, and not try to spread this peace to the East?
