This piece just saddens me.
It's so unnecessary.
Look at this quote here (italics mine):
"Zenaida Colmenero Dircio, 26, of the southern state of Guerrero, died July 24 after crossing the border with her 16-month-old daughter, two second cousins and a guide. She carried the baby girl through the desert in her arms. The smuggler told Dircio it was an hour's walk to Park City, Utah, where her husband lived.
She walked seven hours north of the border before she died."
Here is a young women carrying a 16 month old baby to get to her husband and better living conditions.
The lousy "coyote" tells her it's and hours walk to utah - and she believes him. These folks prey on the unintelligent and the desperate. All while taking their life savings. This is repeated 114 times per hour across our border with mexico, yet with fatal results across the most unforgiving desert in the US sharing its rep with "Death" Valley.
Faith, trust, ignorance and lastly heat killed Zenaida.
Yet, for the life of me - short of taking over Mexico and making it prosper and educating its citizens - I can't come up with a workable solution.
