You're right about corporate waste and inefficiencies. The critical difference between them and government is that a moribund corporation can't jam a gun into my ribs and make me buy their product whether I want it or not. Also, smaller companies can (and do) compete freely and eat the big guys alive.
An exercise for the student is to compare the Fortune 500 list of 1970 with the list of today. Note the reduction in status of many giant Blue Chip corporations that were once assumed to be beyond all competition (IBM is a favorite.) Note also the companies on the upper part of the list that not only weren't there before, but are based on industries that didn't even exist.
