Re: On a Philosophical Note

You may very well be right, Bowser, (or at least, you may have little trouble getting others to agree with you), but the point I was trying to make is that is precisely the sort of question that can't be decided by scientific method.

You can't prove (or disprove) a value judgement, and an attempt to tap the legitimacy of scientific method to get an ideological point across or to justify a moral judgement, is not only wrong, it is often consciously and deliberately misleading. Unfortunately, I can't really prove that either.

Consider the Nazi's use of anthropology and Darwinism to legitimize their atrocities, or the way the Communists manipulated historical and economic theory in order to justify theirs. Even if we agree that those ideologies misused information and logic to arrive at their conclusions, we still cannot rely on any scientific or logical proofs to establish that objectively. Arguing with a Nazi or a Communist is like arguing with a theologian. They simply cannot be moved, and they feel exactly the same about you. How can you prove they are mistaken and you're not?

If you set out to prove something, you can always find data to support your opinions. The question is, will your conclusions convince anyone else?
