What you are really saying is that Western Man would rather be a slave to god than free in an indifferent universe.
I limit this to Western Man because there are other religions that recognize the indifference of the universe. For them, even if there is a god, he is not interested in or concerned with man's fate, He is busy making other plans.
Other religions may believe the gods can be bribed or lobbied, but it is primarily Western Man who believes you can only get to heaven by kissing god's ass.
Personally, I find this sort of sycophantic religious feeling offensive. It robs man of his freedom, his choice and his dignity.
