Exactly. It's human nature. As an example, consider the current state of affairs in the US. The people have decided to trust their security to the State rather than retain their freedoms.
We seem to choose that every time. The "Patriot Act", the TSA, NSA snooping on everyone's communications, screenings everywhere, all are justified in the name of security.
And impinge upon freedom.
And most people think it's worth it. They may be right, but it demonstrates the point.
To add to the point, the more fervent a person is in their belief in God, the more fervent they are about the government ensuring their security. Fundamental Christians are extremely anxious

Oddly, I haven't seen Libertarians bitch about any of these intrusions.
