Space/Science » in reply to CCNet SPECIAL -- Viking at 25: Report by E.P.Grondine (Part 2) . . .

Fiction mixed with fact

I actually agree with Grondine concerning Mars exobiology as a bogus science.
I guess he got that one right by accident. Unfortunately Grondine is so loose with
the truth that one can not believe anything he writes. Case in point:

Grondine said:

"Viking veteran Dan Goldin is very typical in this regard: he started off his
working career engineering manned flight to Mars with the Saturn launcher;
he had moved on to Viking life science experiments; and finally he had ended
up working in the most secret of the defense reconnaissance satellite programs."

From Smithsonian "Air and Space" magazine:

Ironically, Goldin began his own career at a NASA center. After earning a
bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from City College of New York,
he went to NASA's Lewis Research Center in Cleveland. There he worked on
spacecraft propulsion projects from 1962 to 1967, when he left to join
TRW, Inc. He stayed at TRW for 25 years, spending most of that time in the
classified world of military intelligence satellites and climbing the
corporate ladder to the rank of vice president. When he was tapped to run
NASA, he was heading TRW's Space and Technology Group in Redondo Beach,
California.

------------------------------------------------------

Goldin's work at NASA Lewis concerned ion propulsion systems. The Viking
project started in 1968 after Goldin left NASA Lewis to join TRW.
